On this machine with Touch ID it doesn't matter but on my other machines it does. When I try to create a new password, I am first asked for my current one which I've forgotten. The trouble is that if a password is memorable it is "weak". I created a new password yesterday but it doesn't work today or I've misremembered it.

If you don't know what your current password is, you'll want to select the "Forgot Apple ID or password" option. If you click the "Change Password" option on that page, it will ask you for your current password. You would use Change Password if you know what your current password is and just want to make it something different. You would select Forgot Apple ID or password, if you don't know what your current password is.
If you're having trouble resetting the password from the System Preferences menu, you can also reset it directly at the Apple ID website

Did you try selecting Forgot Apple ID?
But the real problem was when I tried to reset it I was asked to enter the last password and the TouchID one was not accepted and I had forgotten it anyway.
