Cydia? How to delete?

My son who is 12, thought it would be a good idea at the time to download and install Cydia on his iPod touch.

Now he cannot delete it no matter what.

It is not an app per se but a kind of program that looks like one the apps that came with the iPod.

Can anyone give me advice on how to delete it?

Thanks.

Ok, not to worry

All contents on his iPod (like your iPad) are stored on a computer. The device will be wiped, but he can put everything back on from his iTunes.

The process is actually quite simple. If he is performing the restore from his computer (containing his files for his device), he can just back up the device and click restore.

Once the process is finished, it will ask if you want to *restore from the previous back up* or set up as a new iPod Touch.

And that's it. I have included a link to Apple Support's advice and step-by-step instructions when restoring iPod Touch/iPhone etc.

go down to the "Restoring your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" arrow in blue.

He said he did hear it from his friends. Go figure.

He said he’s not going to do it again.

And, thanks for clarifying up the pirating bit. And the jailbreaking. I had seen that term many times and never really knew or cared what it meant because I don’t have an iPhone. But I went to that Wiki link and read all about it.

As for me? I am a purist. I buy mostly Apple apps on my iMac and only a few other apps. My system is squeaky clean and vanilla but it runs smooth as can be.

Again, thanks for your help.

The question is, why do you really have a problem with his iPod being jailbroken? It's completely legal, (as you can see here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/26/library-of-congress-adds-dmca-exception-for-j ailbreaking-or-root/) as long as he doesn't pirate any apps, and opens up a wide range of possibilities. Here's a small list of some of the things that are possible if you jailbreak: http://jordandev.info/archives/286. Also, some people need a jailbreak to use their phones, because they using a carrier other than AT&T, and you need to be jailbroken first to do that.

OK here’s the deal.

I have my son every other weekend. The first thing he did this weekend was ask me how to remove two, what I thought were apps. Cydia and Intellius(?) So I did as I would normally do to delete an app, I pressed and held them but they never got the circled X. So I came here.

Now, I never knew what jailbreaking was. Now that I know that it is not illegal that’s fine with me. But I think he and his friends were using this stuff to get free, pirated stuff and he didn’t want any of it.

So not knowing what to do I came here and I was really helped and I am grateful for that. I also learned a lot. What jailbreaking is, how to restore, what Cydia is and can be used for, etc.

So all is right with his iPod, he now has it backed up on my netbook for syncing, mine only from now on, he has it restored, and as a bonus the new OS which he likes.

All in all it was quite a learning experience for the both of us.

My main gig was I didn’t want him pirating apps.

Yup, he’s in the advanced classes. He told me he got the info from kids at the YMCA. He said they all do it. How nice, not!

He promised me on oath he wouldn’t do it.

I trust him, but to keep him honest any pirated apps wouldn’t sync I was told. Is that correct?

I wouldn’t know what to look for as to what was pirated and what wasn’t. At least he came to me and asked to remove it.

He was fearful of pirated stuff so he’s a good kid. Makes me proud.
