You can update through the system settings. How to update your Apple TV - Apple Support

Apple TV (3rd generation) does have its own software version path, that will differ from later models. The current version for this model is Apple TV Software 7.7, per April 26, 2021. Apple TV (3rd generation) is not able to run tvOS 9 or later.
