Apple Mail under Big Sur: constantly "NSIRD_Mail_####" folders in trash on system boot

(Couldn't find an "Apple Mail" specific forum, so posting takes place here, though it doesn't seem a Big Sur related issue, as it occurred under Mojave as well, except for that the folder names were different).

The issue:

On each system start, the trash bin contains one or more "Recovered files" folder(s) which contain one or more "NSIRD_Mail_####" folders (where #### stands for unique combinations of letters and numbers).

The issue seems exclusively related to Apple Mail (probably in combination with the IMAP server settings of my ISP, Vodafone in Germany?),

as I was using other email clients (Thunderbird, Postbox, Canary a.o.) for testing purposes and the trash bin remained empty with these applications.

Does anybody has a clue how this issue could be resolved or what is causing this behaviour?

(I know it's just a minor issue, but it's somewhat dreary with time).

The only unconventional set up with my Mac is that my home folder is on an external SSD. But then, no application ever had any issue with this, so I don't think that this is causing the problem).

Thanks in advance!

Hello sterling r,

Thank you for your assistance.

The linked Apple Support document is already known to me as I’m encountering the described issue since Mojave.

I also know that this is a minor issue and I just have to empty trash to get rid of these folders, but I would really like to know why Apple Mail is the only email application (amongst all that I’ve tried during the last couple of months) which produces these folders.

And it isn’t a „crash related“ issue or similar, it is rather a unique Apple Mail „feature“ during normal use of the application (on my system).

I do like working with Apple Mail, as it offers good possibilities to filter and bundle emails when working with multiple accounts and aliases aso.

But this issue carries potential to disappoint in the long run and therefore I decided to post here to probably get a solution or at least an insight why Mail does not seem to be able to handle its temporary files as one would expect (or as other apps do).

(Rebuilding the accounts, deleting the accounts and setting them up freshly did never help btw.)

Thanks again for your efforts,

cheers

Hello bailier,

thank you for your reply on my „Apple Mail issue“.

I honestly can hardly imagine that this should be expected behaviour.

(In my experience, Temp files from applications only become visible when something „went wrong“ before).

So I think I will place a bug report on this and will continue to evaluate some other email clients in the meantime.

Thanks again for your efforts!

Cheers, R.Simon
