Mail randomly displaying sent items in inbox

Hello,

Since upgrading to a Mac Book pro to an M1 running MacOS Ventura, Apple mail is displaying sent items in the inbox. It does not matter if I have show related enabled or not. Sometime the sent item is just there out of date sort order. I mean that a sent message from 12/14/2022 will show above messages in in the inbox from the 16th. Also, the message knows it is already in the sent items folder because it says so when displaying the mailbox column in the inbox. I cannot drag and drop back to sent items but can move to any other folder.

As a work around I've archiving these random messages showing in my inbox from sent items so they do not come back. But new ones keep showing up.

I tried to open a ticket and support was trying to get me to delete my POP3 mailbox. This would clear all my mail too. I cannot do that.

It's like the inbox is acting like a smart mailbox that is not so smart since it showing sent items too.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

I can confirm that disabling "message follow up suggestions" in general settings for mail, does correct the issue of random send mail showing in my inbox.

Thank you for taking time to share today.

Have a great day!

Sorry I posted this (below) without seeing that the original poster got the answer already. I can't seem to delete my post....

This was easily solved by the advice given by "SpottedOyster": When in the Mail app, click Mail at the top, then Settings, and then uncheck "enable message follow up suggestions." This must be a new option Apple thought might be useful, but obviously not all of us would agree!

Hello,

When I enable filters and select the one mailbox that displaying sent item, with TO ME enabled, it shows my inbox without the sent items. When I disable the filters the sent items show.

See attached screen shots. You can see the mailbox column shows they are in sent-items where all the others show inbox.

You can see here the first image is filter disabled for the mailbox in question.

Second image is with filter enabled no sent items

Third image is mixed inbox filter disabled.

mbrando,

We’re wondering if something may have gotten changed in how things are displayed in your inbox or even just in general. For example, you can turn a filter on and off to change whether the messages are showing unread first or chronological order. Additionally, you can open a new ‘Inbox’ window that may also help reset some of those things for you. We’re including a link to the user guide, because it has a screenshot with the filters button pointed out as well as ways to change how things are being shown - Read emails in Mail on Mac

Change which emails are shown

In the Mail app on your Mac, do any of the following:

• Filter messages: Click the Filter button at the top of the message list to enable message filters, choose View > Filter, then select or deselect filters. You can also click and hold the Filter button, then choose options from the menu that appears.
• Show messages from one mailbox: In the Favorites bar or the Mail sidebar, click the mailbox.
• Show messages from several mailboxes: In the Mail sidebar, select multiple mailboxes.
• Show messages from a specific email account: Click the arrow next to a mailbox (for example, Inbox) in the sidebar, then select an account (for example, your iCloud account).

We certainly don’t want you to risk losing emails from a POP3 account, if they aren’t being stored elsewhere. If you have more than one account set up in the Mail app, does it happen for multiple accounts?

Thanks.

Hello,

So I've been messing with filters now. I enable all mailboxes with TO ME and CC ME that cleans up the inbox. Turning off the filter reveals 6 messages in sent items in the inbox.

I guess I can toggle filter on to see clear inbox and toggle off to see the mess. Or just archive them like I was doing and then I do not need any filters.

Well, I have finally seemed to have fixed all of the endless issues I have had with my email. This was one of them and no matter how I tried, and the endless starts and restarts, I finally reached a place where I could not even receive emails on my Mac. Then following instructions because Google app and Chrome kept asking for me to log in with my password, which it would not accept, my Google 2-Step Verification did not work!

I then searched through Google and deleted that security step, and they suggested there that to start fresh, that I delete my Gmail account in my mail app and sign in again. That was the issue. Clean and simple. Now all of the issues I was having with the mail app have disappeared! At least for now!

Sorry but I can not duplicate this issue where using the Default View in Apple Mail or using the " Column View in Mail.

At least on 3 Apple Computer I am using.

2 on Ventura 13.1 and 1 stuck on High Sierra macO 10.13.6

Go figure.

Then have a few suggestions ;

I'm running Mail, Version 16.0 (3774.500.171.1.1) on a M2 14" MacBook Pro, running Sonoma 14.4. I too began to experience this behaviour, maybe in 14.2 (?). Storing read mails in local folders, then various messages randomly re-appearing in the inbox (deleted messages as well). I have "Follow up suggestions" un-ticked, yet the behaviour persists. Trying various options in the "Mailbox behaviours" in the Accounts tab of Mail's preferences have no affect. It's so random and frustrating I have no idea what to do. Anyway, I don't think there is a solution. (?) I'm beginning to believe that Sonoma is so bug-heavy it is Apple's answer to Windows Vista.

thanks,

Michael
