Mail randomly displaying sent items in inbox

Hello,

Since upgrading to a Mac Book pro to an M1 running MacOS Ventura, Apple mail is displaying sent items in the inbox. It does not matter if I have show related enabled or not. Sometime the sent item is just there out of date sort order. I mean that a sent message from 12/14/2022 will show above messages in in the inbox from the 16th. Also, the message knows it is already in the sent items folder because it says so when displaying the mailbox column in the inbox. I cannot drag and drop back to sent items but can move to any other folder.

As a work around I've archiving these random messages showing in my inbox from sent items so they do not come back. But new ones keep showing up.

I tried to open a ticket and support was trying to get me to delete my POP3 mailbox. This would clear all my mail too. I cannot do that.

It's like the inbox is acting like a smart mailbox that is not so smart since it showing sent items too.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

I can confirm that disabling "message follow up suggestions" in general settings for mail, does correct the issue of random send mail showing in my inbox.

It is like it knows that it lives in sent items already and won't go back.

I think this is a mail app bug.

I'll just keep archiving the ones that pop in. If I archive them they the same ones stop coming back. However, in time new message from sent items show up.

I've reached out to apple support. They could not help either. They did say there were others claiming the same/similar issue with mail app.

For now, I'll just archive the odd sent items to keep my inbox clear.

It is just weird though. You clean out the inbox or reduce to 3 message then come back and there are 8 with 5 of them saying they ARE IN the sent items folder when they are clearly visible in the inbox.

I'll test when they show up again. Filtering does seem like a good clue. It does act like a smart mailbox filter that has decided to show sent items in the inbox.

since updating my OS on my iPhone and Mac, I, too, am receiving emails that I sent back in my inbox - especially when I’ve made an inquiry. I called Apple support and we saw that I do not have the FOLLOW UP SUGGESTIONS turned on in settings. No one can provide answers. It’s the stupidest concept and should be made optional. Now I waste more time deleting messages and less time being productive. Apple needs a fix!

Thanks, that helped me, too. What a very stupid feature - obviously any email conversation will stop at some time (or so I hope), ideally after one exchange. Why would anyone pollute a mailbox with this?

I had hoped it would work, but the follow up suggestion was not selected. It happens a lot less than before. Now it just happens randomly, but I must look like an idiot when I respond to all because I thought it was a new email in my inbox.

Mine are not random, but happen whenever I send an email. I am using Mac Version Sonoma 14.1.2

I have had sporadic issues with mail for about 6 months. Emails disappear and then reappear. All items in trash disappear. I have set up an All Trash folder so that I can check trash if needed. Overall, it seems an issue with the app.

Nope (!). Does not for me.

“Follow up suggestions” has been turned off a long time for me, yet random emails from my sent items still show up in my inbox for no apparent reason or rhyme. Super dumb.

This is on my Gmail account in Apple Mail on aN iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 17.5.1.

Hello,

This made no difference.

I restarted in safe mode and followed the instruction.

Same issue persists.

Thanks @SpottedOyster. That is such cool functionality if you want it, and it seems to have baffled the "experts" too. I'm sure you'd get a job at apple support no problem (if you ever wanted one).
