Sent mails showing in iCloud Mail Inbox, but only on Mac Mail

I have iCloud mail with a custom domain. I read/send mail on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and once/while on icloud.com - and everything usually syncs fine. But a couple of times a month, Mac Mail decides to show COPIES of my most recent 2-3 Sent emails (but no more) in my Mac Mail INBOX. Often the emails were sent a few days/week ago - but then all of a sudden a few just show up in Mac Mail Inbox. This am (12/4), an email sent on 11/29 just showed up in Inbox. It wasn't there yesterday.

No I did not BCC, and it is only the last 1-3 Sent emails, not the entire Sent folder. I've checked Mail Preferences and View/folder settings, and nothing I've changed fixes it. FYI, they also are not showing on iPhone/iPad/iCloud Inbox, only Mac Mail Inbox, so iCloud seems to be synching fine. So that tells me it's a Mail display bug? 2020 M1 Air, Ventura 13.0.1, Mail 16.0

Hey mktstrategy,

It sounds like you're possibly seeing a "follow up" suggestion. We found the following: Reply to, forward, or follow up on emails in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Get reminded to follow up on emails with no response

If you send a message and don’t receive a response in 3 days, the sent email automatically resurfaces to the top of your inbox to help you remember to follow up.

• To ignore a follow-up suggestion, swipe right on the message in the message list.
• To turn this feature on or off, choose Mail > Settings, click General, then select or deselect the checkbox next to “Enable message follow up suggestions.”

Let us know if that's what you're seeing.

Take care!

Turning off the Follow-Up Suggestion in Mac Mail (eventually) stopped the Sent emails from being moved to Inbox. Thank you! I have now researched that phrase online and the Phone/iPad both have this too (as of ios16) so I turned that off on those devices too.

Attn Mac Mail developers: It would be VERY helpful for you to put some sort of visual reference (or tag) in the Inbox window that clearly shows the message showing is indeed a SUGGESTION, otherwise it just looks like any other message (albeit from myself since it's a Sent mail message showing in the Inbox). Without that, there's no visual way to know it's a Suggestion that I see. I did see that in iOS there may be this visual cue, but my issues is in Mac Mail. thanks all!

Hey mktstrategy,

First, check the website of your mail provider to see if your messages are showing in the Sent folder there. If your messages are being stored on the mail server, then check where your iPhone or iPad is storing them:

  1. Open Settings > Accounts & Passwords
  2. Tap on the account that you're having the issue with
  3. Tap Account > Advanced > Sent Mailbox
  4. Choose the mailbox under the "On the server" heading

If you find that this was already the option selected and you still don't see them on your iPhone or iPad, change the setting and test it out again.

Hey BrianK90,

Appreciate your reply/suggestions, but please re-read my issue above. Apple/iCloud is my hosting provider (with custom domain), and I am using iCloud to sync iCloud Mail folders across all my devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone).

The issue is NOT that the emails AREN'T showing in my Sent folder, the issue is that occasionally 2-3 recently Sent emails are showing in both my Sent folder AND my Inbox, and only when looking at Inbox via Mac Mail. If I pick up my iPad/iPhone (or look at icloud.com Mail) while sitting at my Mac, the Inbox in these three show Inbox as Inbox, Sent as Sent. This is why I think that the issue/bug is with Mac Mail alone, and wondering if anyone else has seen this odd behavior. This is a 2020 M1 Air running Ventura 13.0.1 and Mail 16.0, and the iPads/iPhones are 16.1.1. Thanks all for any clues!

On iOS there is no visual clue. I’ve found it quite distressing/confusing as I live with fatigue and brain fog so I end up looking at it for ages wondering what it is or what I’ve done wrong.

It seems that maybe it switches off when you switch it off in the settings but then with any software update, switches on again, even though the setting doesn’t change. *I think* 🤔 (I’m doubting myself now.)
