How do I hide .xmp files that currently appear with documents ?

On my old computer I somehow altered the settings so that documents created also created visible .xmp files. How do I get rid of these - or at least make them invisible ?

I want to copy these files on to my new computer without them.

I know how to do this for photos where they are more critical - but I guess they are not critical for documents. Should I just delete them ?

Many thanks
