How do I add old episodes to the playlist?

When I have added a new podcast to a station in podcaster I would like to add old episodes so they get listed in the station. Before the update of podcaster in iOS 14.5 I just went into “All episodes” and then press a + beside the episode and then the episode showed up as unplayed. Now the + is gone and the only way to add old episodes seems to be to mark them as played and then mark them as unplayed again. There must be a quicker way?

First you need to turn off Hide Played Episodes in Show settings. Then tap the three dots in each episode you wish to list again and select Mark as Unplayed. Finally, re-select Hide Played Episodes in Show settings and you’ll be back to seeing unplayed Episodes only.

This was to your first set of pics. If you digest this response it will clear up your second set.

OK. That helps.

Apple’s Support info at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201859 and in the iOS and Mac user manuals at https://support.apple.com/manuals doesn’t give us the fine details, but I THINK the Podcasts app (not “Podcaster”) is a guide for the settings of new Shows to which we Follow, but are overridden by the Show and Station settings. That MAY NOT be the case, but we’ll figure it out with more experience with this new iOS 14.5 app overhaul. I bring that up because you have chosen in the Podcast app settings to Hide Played Episodes.

Do you want to have a Station list all played episodes of Shows or just select ones?

If you want to see ALL played episodes in the Station list, you need to turn Off the toggles in the “In Our Time” Show settings for Hide Played Episode and Remove Played Downloads. Also turn Off the toggle in the History Station settings for Unplayed Only. A Stations cannot contain both Shows keeping only unplayed eps and Shows keeping All eps.

If you only wish to see select played episodes in the Show and Station lists, you need to leave the toggles in Show and Station settings as you currently have them, but must individually mark those select eps as Unplayed after playing them each time, however cumbersome. A better way than keeping them in the Show or Station list is to simply Save them. Then you’ll find them in the Podcasts app Library in the Saved list.

Incidentally, the best way to go back and find a recently played episode in a Station is the tap the icon on the bottom left (circled), then choose See All.

The reason the episodes say Mark as Played is because they are currently unplayed. If there was no limit in the episodes you want to see they would all appear.

The image below shows the Podcasts app settings (left frame), the Station settings (middle) and the Show settings (right). You need to turn off options related to hiding played Episodes and limiting Episodes. Then you will see all played and unplayed episodes.

if you only want to see a couple played Episodes instead of all of them, you need to hide played Episodes, then individually mark the ones you want as unplayed

Saving an episode is another way to retain eps you want to keep handy.

That became very messy, ignore the first reply. I have replicated the process and started a new Station.

We seem to have pretty much the same settings you and I. What you see is the station "History" that I have added three podcasts and the settings say to "include all" but they only include the last episode of each podcast(Two podcasts have the same episode as the last one, that's why it says two "The second Baron war"), that's not a problem thou.

What I want to do now is to add some of the old episodes from the "In our time" podcast to the Station list. And when I go into the podcast you can see that all of the 300 episodes are unplayed. And then I want to add the episode "The Franco-American Alliance 1778" and I click the three dots. The only thing to choose is "Mark as played". I do that and you can see that it's marked as played and then after that, I can mark it as Unplayed. When I have done that it shows up in the Station list. Not before. This is a very complicated way of doing this because before you just had a + sign next to all episodes, played and unplayed. And yes, you can swipe but not that friendly either if you have 10-15 old episodes you wanna get into the list.

I also had the same issue, with wanting to listen to older podcast episodes before I subscribed, but not having them show up in "Stations" that I created, despite having the app configured so that they should show. I'm also glad that at least I know _a_ way to get them to show up (thanks to OP!) by marking them as played, then unmarking again.

Just one tip, if you have a Mac then it's much quicker to do as you can select all the episodes that you want to mark in one go, rather than doing them individually. (Then the changes will sync across to the iOS podcasts app)

I have been pulling my hair out over this since the update. It stinks that Mark as Played and then Marked as Unplayed is the only way to get the old episodes to show up, but at least now I have a way to. Thanks OP. That was the one thing I didn’t try yet.

Clicking the + sign was bad enough, especially if there were many old episodes, but this is far more tedious.

The listing works fine once I have Marked as played and then Marked as unplayed.

I have the setting to Show all Episodes in the station, hide unplayed but the only ones that show in the station when adding a new podcast are the last ones and that's fine, otherwise, the Station would be crowded. But my problem is that its so unnecessary that you need to Mark as played and Mark as unplayed before it shows in the Station when it earlier just had a + at the side

You should not have to mark as played, then as Unplayed. Since you are not including pictures, please be very descriptive. Give me a specific Show you have placed in a specific Station, then the settings for the Show and Station regarding listing all or just unplayed

For convenience, here is the pic of the Podcasts app settings (left frame), the Station settings (middle) and the Show settings (right).
