Hi, Grijzeman, maybe i can help you.. dunno why, but the default for hard drives, at least in Catalina or later, is read- only.. if you do a “Get Info”, by clicking on the drive once so it’s highlighted, then pressing Apple + I keys on the keyboard.. a long window will pop up… and you want to look at the part towards the bottom of the window.. it should say “sharing and permissions”… and there should be a column. Left hand side is the user, right hand side is the permissions.. eg, read/read and write.. and this applies to everybody.. including the system. To change it, and to make it stick, click on the padlock at the bottom of the window… you should hear a ‘click’ and the padlock should unlock… make the changes as you like, then click the padlock.. you should be asked for your login name + password… type them in… pressing return or enter on the keyboard after each part/entry..
that should do it, i hope.. under Finder preferences, show removeable/bootable drives, show cd’s and dvd’s, all that, should be ticked off ( checkboxes) .. sorry, i don’t know of an optimized app for running a Buffalo hard drive.. and getting the data from it… under Utilities, then disk utility, try disk first aid… i have found your model of hard drive… and the maker of it, and Buffalo sez DriveStation, which works with Time Machine for backing up .. your Mac ( hint, hint, hint) -all i can find are instructions for Mac users… available here:
https://www.buffalotech.com/products/drivestation-usb-2.0-hard-drive
there is, akaik, no software needed or available for Mac…. It’s all Windows stuff.. 99% of it..
but.. here’s buffalo’s support page for that thing:
https://www.buffalotech.com/support/downloads/ministation-metro…
honestly, if you’d have said “ Buffalo” to me… i’d either be thinking about the animal (also called Bison, or the wings…

Thanks for your help.
I tried what you suggested as well and it does not work even Buffalo’s latest Utilities upgrade of 2019.
I believe that babowa is right. It’s the 32bit processing power that’s not supported by Big Sur.
You normally do not need an app to access data on an external drive. So, what is on the external and is it all 32 bit? If they are, then it is not supported in Big Sur and there is no app that can help.
And,I just realized: how is that external drive formatted? Did you format it for Mac when you first got it or ?
You should never use any software included with an external hard drive; for one, it is not necessary with a Mac, and it can mess up things. So, when you buy any hard drive or SSD, use Disk Utility on your Mac to erase it and format it for Mac. That is all that is needed.
Thanks, I believe you are correct.
I’ll find another way.
