Does anyone have a US icon show up in a box in the upper right hand of their MacBook???? And if so, does anyone have knowledge of the origin of this?

That's called the "Input Menu". It shows the language of the keyboard (input source) you are currently using. If you don't want the US flag, you can replace the input source called "US" with the one called "ABC" in system preferences > keyboard > input sources.

>System Preferences> Keyboard>Input source
make a change—
changes depending on the current input language.
Type in another language on your Mac with input sources ...
