USB sound quality on M1 Macbook Air

Am somewhat surprised that the USB sound quality is not as good as on my 2009 iMac 27"

It is easy to tell a difference with the same amplifier/speaker setup. A using the Apple USBc to USB adapter into the amps USB input.

Doesn't sound as dynamic or airy on the Macbook AIR (no pun intended). Would have thought the audio quality to be at least as good. Yes, am streaming both with equalizer off and same downloaded music from Apple.

ps: While I don't use it for music, the headphone output is seems to have more distortion as well
