FaceTime sign in issues

I have used FaceTime without difficulty over several years but my iPad appears to have signed me out of FaceTime and when I attempt to sign in it is unable to connect with the FaceTime server. When I go to settings and try and sign in to FaceTime I am unable to input my password. Any suggestions ?
