Reset a 2008 iMac

Hi guys,

I recently found my 2008 iMac on Mac OS X. I can’t remember the password and have no way of getting in. What would be the best way to get back in? I’m not fussed about loosing the stuff on my hard drive.

cheers in advance.

Insert the original install disc #1 that came with that iMac. Startup holding the C or Alt (option) key, navigate to Utilities and select Reset password.

Hi Kezsingh,

Do you have another Mac? If the iMac is on a OS X version is newer or on OS X Yosemite, you can make a bootable installer to reset the password.

Get your version of OS X if newer or on Yosemite, How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support, then create the bootable installer, How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support.

Now, follow the steps:

  1. Shut off the iMac, and plug in the bootable installer.
  2. Turn it on, and immediately press and hold the "option" key.
  3. Select the bootable installer.
  4. Select Utilities > Terminal.
  5. Type resetpassword
  6. Follow the steps.

Cheers,

Jack
