Moving an iMac from the USA to Australia

I recently moved from the USA to Australia. I went to an Apple store to buy an Australian power cord. They did not have any but recommended that I buy a kettle cord on eBay. I did but heard a faint crackly or staticky sound when I started to plug it into the computer. I got scared of frying my computer and did not finish plugging it in. My USA plug was for 125 Volts. My Australian plug is for 250 Volts.

while I am grateful for all knowledgeable answers, I would prefer if an Apple expert answered this question but how can I know for sure that I won’t fry my computer? I once fried a hair straightener here while using an adapter and want to keep that from happening to my computer.

I am attaching a photo for illustration purposes.

The iMac power supply is rated for 100-240V AC.

Electrical and Operating Requirements

  • Line voltage: 100–240V AC
  • Frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz, single phase
  • Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
  • Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
  • Operating altitude: tested up to 10,000 feet

If you are worried about the voltage or polarity of the outlet or cord that you are wanting to use, then you should contact a certified electrician and have him test the outlet.
