Is it normal for iphone backup to duplicate itself during a restore?

I have a iPhone backup on my laptop that's 95GB, and when I try to restore my iPhone, it looks like it tries to create a duplicate of itself and runs out of space (only have 85GB free space). I then get the error message , "iTunes could not restore the iphone because an error occurred while reading from or writing to the iphone." Is it normal for it to make a copy of itself? I have to buy a new hard drive to restore my phone?

Windows, Windows 10
