my dock is displayed on my external monitor how do I switch it back to my macbook air

We understand that your Dock is only appearing on your external display. If Mirror Displays is selected in Apple menu > System Preferences > Displays, then choose the Arrangement tab, all the displays shows the same thing. You should still be able to access the Dock for both displays. If you go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar, is this set to left, bottom, or right edge:
