Remove Parental Controls - forgot administrator's password

My husband and I are in our 70s. We recently tried to get on Kelly Blue Book and it said we couldn't because of parental controls.. We have no idea how parental controls even got activated on this computer. We have never activated it knowingly on any of our computers. I have a Max OS 10.12 i have read many things to try to get password but am afraid I will lose my information. Is there a way to change the administrator's password so I can get to the parental controls that we have no need for and are not allowing us to go to normal sites.

Thanks for your help. Heaven knows we need it. JLR4

Boot the Mac with command-R held at startup using a wired keyboard.

In the Utilities menu pick the Terminal program.

Type

resetpassword

as one word followed by the return key. Follow the directions to reset your password.

Write it someplace down physically secure where you'll remember where it is.
