Apple TV Location

I manage the internet connectivity on my company's business aircraft. My question revolves around how the Apple TV gets its location.

We often fly multiple international flights. We are connecting on a KA band satellite network and the ISP we use has all of their data egress to their own data center in Florida prior to it going out to the internet and back before it goes over the satellite system.

When we use the Roku device, it gets its location via the IP address our ISP gives us, therefore, no matter where we are in the world we can watch ATT TV, Netflix, basically any US based streaming services.

When we try to stream over the Apple TV it works fine until we leave the continental USA. Then we get the error stating content not authorized, etc.

I assume this is based on location. How does the Apple TV do this? Does it acquire location via surrounding iPhone's GPS?

I cannot figure this out and would like to know the exact real reason.

I have no experience with the Air Travel industry but I do know that if I take my Apple TV to a new country the only content I can get in that country is the content available there. For example, I subscribe to Netflix which is available in many countries on Apple TV. When I go to Mexico and connect my Apple TV I get Netflix however the content is not the same as what I receive in the USA. This is managed by a collaboration between Apple and the governments and providers in each country.

There are rarely developers that are in user forums, however there are developer forums that you can join if you are interested in becoming an Apple developer.

Good luck on your information quest.

I guess my experience has been that if you call them they ask if its under warranty and want you to pay for help.

I thought that there were some developer types here or someone who may have experienced this as well that could chime in.

I will give them a call and see where I get. My guess is that there is a proprietary network that they will not want to disclose that lets all of these Apple devices communicate and share info with each other.
