Migration Assistant not working

I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro and I’m trying to migrate information from my old Mini Mac to the new machine. I keep getting the message “The selected source cannot be used for migration. The source contains a newer release of macOS. Your Mac requires an upgrade before you can migrate from this source”. I have updated both machines to Big Sur 11.3.1, but I continue to get the same error message. What do I need to do?

try restarting each machine.

Also be certain you have enabled File Sharing.

To make the connection, when the file sharing dialog comes up on the NEW computer, it is asking for credentials that will allow access (as if you were logging in) on the OLD computer.
