iTunes does not import m4a files

The issue is likely down to non-ASCII characters such as ±. You may fare better if you export the lists in .m3u8 format, although there are still some characters that iTunes will fail to interpret correctly, causing it to fail to import the tracks in question.

I have this problem too, though I use a mac desktop running 11.3.1 and I only have one m4a file that will not import, either via file>import or by dragging to itunes. I created the audio file on my iphone, then transferred it to my desktop. But it just won't go into itunes. Help??

You appear to be talking about an unrelated issue. Can you play this audio file you created in other software such as QuickTime or VLC? Perhaps you can import it into Audacity and save a version that is compatible with Music.
