Apple Watch (3) counting way too many flights climbed

After years of counting accurately, my Apple Watch began counting incredible numbers of flights climbed each day, usually between 70 to 100. It often counts 40 flights before I’ve even left my apartment (which doesn’t have multiple floors).

I’ve tried de-pairing and re-pairing as a new Watch; I’ve tried recalibrating the Watch; I’ve tried letting the battery die and not recharging it for a couple days – nothing helps.

Has anyone else been able to solve this issue?

Today I found the solution, which I haven’t seen mentioned many places - to use a toothbrush and running water to clean the vents on the side of the watch! In my case they seem to have become blocked by accumulated soap from washing my hands! After this, the Watch began counting accurately once more.

In case anyone else is struggling with this and looking for solutions:

In my case the small vents seem to have become blocked by accumulated soap from washing my hands; after cleaning them, the Watch began counting accurately once more.

Hi posok3,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand that your Apple Watch is providing inaccurate readings. You want to make sure both iPhone and Apple Watch are running latest software versions. Restart both devices. Check out Get the most accurate measurements using your Apple Watch.

You can unpair Apple Watch, pair again with iPhone, but set up as new to see if this behavior continues.

Warm regards.
