Apple Watch 7 not consistently counting flights of steps

My new Apple Watch 7 is not consistently counting flights of stairs climbed. I am climbing the same flight of stairs, so the flights qualify as a flight, and I’ve checked to make sure the settings are correct. I climbed 7 flights of stairs today and the watch only counted 2.

FWIW one user said he talked to some Apple Watch engineers and they suggested:

  1. locking the water (swipe up and hit the water drop),
  2. washing the watch with alcohol or soap/water,
  3. flush the water out per the instructions - pull on crown.

It worked! Voila! Miscounting flights of stairs problem fixed.

The watch uses its internal barometer to count the flights of stairs.
