Active Window suddenly goes to background after update to 11.3.1

After upgrading to Big Sur 11.3.1, the active window suddenly goes to the background, even if I'm typing in it. Very frustrating.

New development – when this happens the terminal app opens for no apparent reason.

Which applications exhibit this behavior?

Does this occur for a different user, e.g., Guest ? Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Does this occur after starting up in Safe Mode

Consider the possibility of a third party software conflict.  EtreCheck can be used to investigate what is installed.  Give it Full Disk Access. You can post the report here. Someone might spot something.

You have a lot of third party stuff installed. I would bet it is some of that causing the problem, but isolating the culprit might be tedious. Have a look at the etrecheck report under: Kernel Extensions, Launch Agents, Launch Daemons, User Launch Agents, User Login Items, and you will see the spectrum of possible places where the problem originates.
