Using Command Click to Open a New Tab from Google Search Results

If I search for something (usually via Google) I like to command click on individual search results to open up each page in a new tab. This always used to work fine but over the past year or two, sometimes instead of doing what I want, Safari replaces my search results with the page I selected and opens up a new tab with a blank Google search page, which loses me my list of search results. It's as if certain search results manage to hijack and take over my search to exclude other things that the search might have thrown up. Why has this started to happen and how can I stop it?

Thank you for that additional information, Andy_Morley. It's appreciated

Does the issue happen in a new admin user account or while your Mac is in safe mode? When testing, try searching for the same page(s) this happens with as well as others:

Please let us know the results when you're able.

Hi there Andy_Morley,

It appears that you're having a problem using Google search in Safari. When you use the ⌘-click to open a search link in a new tab, it opens in the same tab as your search results disappear. We definitely understand how frustrating this could be, and we're glad to provide assistance.

Keyboard shortcuts and gestures in Safari on Mac - Apple Support -- Since this should work, check your Safari settings. With Safari open, choose Safari > Preferences > Tabs, and make sure that "⌘-click opens a link in a new tab" has been selected.

If this was already selected or it didn’t resolve the issue, which Mac are you using and which macOS is it currently on? Does this happen only when you search using Google or does it also happen with other search services?

All the best.

Thanks again, Andy_Morley.

Open items automatically when you log in on Mac - Apple Support -- Since the issue doesn't occur in a new user account, in your user account, go to Apple Menu () > System Preferences > User & Groups. Make note of the Login Items you're using, then delete each one. After they've been removed, restart your Mac and test. If removing the Login Items resolves the issue, add each one back one at a time and restart/test after each one.

How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support -- If the issue persists, reinstall macOS Catalina. Please be sure to have a fresh backup before beginning: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

Let us know how that goes, and have a good day!

Thanks for this. I checked Safari preferences and the correct option is enabled in the tabs settings. My computer is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13 inch, early 2015) running macOS Catalonia 10.15.3 and I'm using Safari Version 13.0.5 (15608.5.11). I haven't tried other search engines recently - so fa this is only associated with Google. It only seems to happen with some web pages.

Thank you for the advice. I have just tried in safe mode and exactly the same thing happened - I opened Safari and used Google to search the string: "Batley Grammar: Parents pull children". When a Sunday Times piece with this headline came up in the search results I did 'command-click' on that result. As soon as I did that a new tab came up with 'Favourites' showing on the tab where normally I would expect to see a title pertaining to the item I had just selected. At this stage my search results were still displaying in the first tab but when I clicked on the new tab to activate it, it displayed my Google 'favourites' as icons as if I'd just opened a new window or tab in Safari but when I re-activated the first tab, the list of search results had been replaced by the Sunday Times page I had selected.

This always happens with the Sunday Times but not with most other web pages. With Wikipedia, it happens maybe 25% of the time. For example, after I restarted my computer just now to return from safe mode back to normal running mode, I opened a Safari window, typed in the string "Helen Hunt" and command-clicked her Wikipedia entry which was the first item in the search results. When I did this it opened up a new tab entitled 'favourites' and when I clicked on that, then back on the search results, they had been replaced by Wikipedia exactly as described above for the Sunday Times. However, as I was typing this, I thought I would try Helen Hunt again in a new search and did exactly the same as I had 5 minutes earlier but that time, Safari worked normally with the Wikipedia page coming up in the new tab and my search results remaining in the first one.

Though it only happens some of the time with Wikipedia, with the Sunday Times, this happens almost all the time whatever the news story and I seem to remember the Times is the same in this respect. At the moment I have selected 'block all cookies' in Safari which doesn't seem to work as it should either as I still get lots of cookies that I then delete each session. The problem with tabs though happens regardless of whether cookies are blocked or not blocked.

Thanks again for your help.
