I movie running slow

iMovie is running super slow, I have plenty of storage space and my mac and iMovie are up to date. Why is this happening, can it be fixed? I can't edit or work on it because nothing is playing well and anytime I adjust something it lags the whole project.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.3

Try resetting the System Management Controller (but no longer available for the new M1 computers:

Also, try resetting the NVRAM or PRAM:
