Big Sur upgrade APFS case sensitive time machine

I recently upgraded to Big Sur and made a back up with Time Machine to an external hard drive. The backup apparently defaulted to a case-sensitive APFS format. While on a case-insensitive APFS computer, I was trying to look at my backup files. The disk utility shows memory has been taken up but I cannot see any folders or files and Time Machine doesn’t find it either. So, my question is can a computer with an APFS see files when the backup is APFS case sensitive? Do the files only show up if both drives have the same file system format?
