How encrypt new boot drive.

I want the external SSD boot drive to be encrypted. Do the encrypt when format drive or do after the OS is installed by turning on File Vault?

Encrypt an external SSD I have a Samsung T7 External 2Tb SSD that I want to encrypt but I am not getting that option is disc utility. I have the option for spinning external drives. I suspect this is not possible with SSD"s. Is this correct and is there any workaround?

RE: Does encrypting an ext. HDD include a password login? Does encrypting my ext. OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro HDD mean that each time I turn it on, a password will be required to access the files? Also, are there any known issues with this method of encryption? It seems I do not need to erase the contents of this drive to enable encryption.

Either way. Only difference is FileVault allows you to decrypt and log in with same user/password.

If you encrypt first, FV will just ask which user accounts to use to decrypt.
