HDR-FX1 Camera compatibility to iMac

I have two Sony video cameras that I have been using on Mac since they were produced. All of a sudden they will not be recognised on the Mac computer.

Does this mean that once a camera is no longer on their Mac compatible list, which mine no longer are, that they can be no longer used with a Mac computer?

If this is right it is ****** ridiculous.

As I think I said before, don't put too much faith on a list.

The list includes a very small subset of existing cameras, as it is not feasible to test all of them. Not being on the list may just mean it has not been tested with recent versions of the software.

A change on the list does not mean a change in software.

To be clear, we are dealing with tape cameras that connect over Firewire. These cameras do NOT record H264 in any incarnation, so that is completely beside the point.

The DCR TRV 110E records DV video.

The HDR-FX1E records HDV video.

Do the cameras show in System Information?

What exactly happens when you try to record from any of these cameras using Quicktime Player->New Movie Recording?

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

Do not put too much faith in the fact that the camera is fails to be in some list.

These lists are always incomplete.

This is a DV camera, as far as I can tell, and as such it IS compatible. Several people still use these cameras with current macs (even M1 macs).

But...

As time progresses, it can be more and more difficult to ensure that old peripherals continue to work.

Your camera has Firewire ("i.Link" in Sony parlance), with probably a 4-pin connector. The last macs to have Firewire ports were released some 8 years ago. Newer macs had Thunderbolt 1, then TB 2, which required an adapter. Even more recent macs require TWO adapters - TB3-TB2-FW and a DV 8-pin to 4-pin cable, or even a third adapter. These most work, but there are a lot of points of possible failure.

You need to uninstall intego.

You also have an inordinate amount of old stuff. Perian, for example, is still there, has not worked for years, and can cause problems with video. Go to System Preferences, control-click on Perian and choose Uninstall.

You don't need the samsung thing, it is old and not required to handle any drives. Probably more of the above are old.

Same thing with internet plugins: flip4mac, sharepoint... old stuff.

You should probably do a simple test: install Big Sur on an external SSD, use it to start your mac and test.

Often people upgrade successively in place, your mac may have been upgraded since, what... Mavericks? Yosemite?

The problem is that things like kernel extensions accumulate, and at some point will break.

That is why it is usually recommended to do a clean install at the time of a major upgrade.

You may interpret it wrong. In reality, Apple has no input into Sony's product planning, product support, or Sony's decision to curtail support for any Sony product and its interoperability with Apple hardware or operating systems. Same drill with other non-Apple products.

The Sony HDR-FX1 was introduced at least as early as 2005, and you honestly cannot expect a product that is now 16 years old to just be plug and play with Apple products as though time and technology have not passed.

My normal method of importing video material has been, from Sony HDR – FX1 a camera and a Sony hi8t TRV camera via 4 pin FireWire to an 800, then adapter to Thunderbolt connection. All cables and connections are relatively new, and I also realise that sometimes new means nothing at all. All this worked until early this month. This was about the time (6th of May) that Apple Mac updated the camera approved list.

Both cameras can get access to the computer via a Canopus 55 and Elgato devices to a separate folder and to a degree through quick time, but results are not all that sharp.

The cables that I use are a 4 pin FireWire to 800 FireWire then adapter to thunderbolt one. The cables are used when going through Canopus and Elgato are a RDA to the device then 400 FireWire to 800 then adapter to thunderbolt one.

The results from both cameras are identical. I keep wondering if either of those two cameras are not on the compatible Mac list then will they work with Mac? I noticed now that there are no HDR-FX1E and DCR TRV 110E listed in the approved list. I notice also that 4:2:2 10-bit H.264 files are not supported and I think the FXE fits in that area.

From what I can see, the camera no longer exists in the system information.
