I can buy a used macbook air. How do I check if this device is stolen?

A used computer should be handed to you as if were new, when you start it up you should be welcomed with the setup screen so that you can set it up using your Apple ID. If the computer were stolen, and the real owner had set up Find My Mac, a thief wouldn't be able to properly prepare the MacBook for sale. I would not purchase a used mac that wasn't properly prepared for sale. What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support

You might also het the device serial number and check with your local authorities to see if a matching serial number has been reported stolen. Find the model and serial number of your Mac - Apple Support
