mac Desktop has no new updates

Why isn't my mac updating? It's stuck on version 10.13.6 (mac OS High Sierra) It' always says there are no updates but when I connect my iPhone it stated an update is required. I click on update but it does nothing but goes through the process but then go away with not updating!

It's easy to confuse Update & Upgrade the 1st being say 10.13.5 to 10.13.6, the second being say 10.13.6 to 10.14.x

Thanks but I have a mac desktop, not a laptop. I will check out the links further.

I've had this comp for several years and so far it still operates as it did when I first got it.

For the internet, I use fiber-optic (greenlight) so it is really fast. I'll enclose a screenshot of

what "about" this mac. I do appreciate all you have stated and will check all links. I use Chrome

and have for years. My problem was - not being able to sync iPhone 11 to the desk top. :)
