M1 Mini restarts when in sleep mode

My M1 mini will randomly restart while in sleep mode. It does not happen every time, but it happens 4 or 5 times a week. I have noticed that the Panic report always starts the same:

"kernel" : "Darwin Kernel Version 20.4.0: Fri Mar 5 01:14:02 PST 2021; root:xnu-7195.101.1~3\/RELEASE_ARM64_T8101",

"incident" : "4FD7B489-A728-4E27-AE1C-37A3CB0C932F",

"crashReporterKey" : "43C41E4B-DC1A-3E24-DADE-B3B1877F3184",

"date" : "2021-05-12 00:20:34.73 -0500",

"panicString" : "panic(cpu 4 caller 0xfffffe0020fcf318): DCPEXT PANIC - ASSERT: AFKSerialize.cpp:507: [_data] - iomfb_video_async(11)\nASSERT: AFKSerialize.cpp:507: [_data]\nRTKit: RTKit-1558.100.24.debug - Client: local-ipad13dcp.release\n!UUID

I do not know what to look for. I have run an EtreCheck report which has not found any major issues. Any suggestions to check? I did not someone had a similar issue which was resolved when he turned of Power nap in the Entergy preferences. I am trying that now.

Well, FWIW, the Panic restart has been speculated on the Internet to being related to monitors. See if plain vanilla 1 monitor to dongle-free mini HDMI gets you anything.

Hubs don’t have a spectacular records with the minis either. Snip them out and see if it gets you progress.

In all cases, lower expectations on causes/fixes from either Apple or 3rd party manufacturers if you do. Sorry, but that’s how the system works with special configurations. I do hope you get progress here, hopefully someone with a similar config will chip in with ideas. Cheers

I didn’t mean you should su&lwi. However, if your particular configuration is special, an Apple fix may or may not be forthcoming i.e. you need to plan on basis that it won’t be.

A quick browse through the Etre seems to place your config in the “special” category. I see lots of Ethernets and hard disks, presumably these use dongles & hubs. Also a bit heavy on Apps - Malware, CleanMyMac, SpeedTest etc. One or more of these could likely be the problem. I would unload all utility 3rd party Apps, skin the Ethernet to the native M1 RJ-45 port and see if you gain improvements, and continue on that path. Maybe someone else will chip in with something more promising. Good luck!

Hi Michael and hscitas,

If you check the Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off then obviously your M1 Mac Mini is not going to sleep and will remain ON even when the display has been turned OFF. My point is that if the Mac is not going to sleep then there is no question of it waking up and therefore no restarting from sleep. In my opinion, this option just circumvents the issue and does not solve it. On the other hand, I am not sure whether a complete solution is available at this time.

I had this issue with my M1 MacBook Air and I circumvented it by turning OFF Automatic Time Machine Backups before putting the MacBook to sleep. The thought process here is to see whether the next update to macOS resolves this issue.

System experienced another panic attack and rebooted about two hours ago. the report indicated the same panic string " "date" : "2021-05-27 23:09:30.32 -0500",

"panicString" : "panic(cpu 4 caller 0xfffffe002951f318): DCPEXT PANIC - ASSERT: AFKSerialize.cpp:507: [_data] - iomfb_video_async(11)\nASSERT: AFKSerialize.cpp:507: [_data]\nRTKit: RTKit-1558.120.1.debug - Client: local-ipad13dcp.release\n!"

I think it is time to get Apple engineering engaged.

I have not seen the commentary on the monitors, I will likely try that first, then if needed the hubs. My personal suspicion is the issue is more to do with Apple hardware/system configuration, "the system is overloading itself over time to the point of crashing". I may trying restarting the computer every ~3 days to see if that has an effect.

The saga continues

Turning off the sleep setting did not work, the computer restarted again today. One new twist was mouse (wired) froze, even after unplugging it and replugging it remained frozen. I quit all open applications, and relaunched Finder and it remained frozen. Had to do a hard reboot and now everything works fine.

I am going to turn off Time Machine to see if that makes a difference.

Lastly, the crash report the same as what I originally reported.

Any other suggestions?
