Time Machine on an external drive
How do I turn off Time Machine so that I can re-format the disk. I want to reuse the disk for general file storage.

How do I turn off Time Machine so that I can re-format the disk. I want to reuse the disk for general file storage.

Go into Time Machine Preferences and select "Select Disk" Choose the disk you want to remove and click "Remove Disk".

Go to Apple > System Preferences > Time Machine > click on Add or Remove Backup Disk... > highlight the Disk and click Remove Disk.
Then go to Disk Utility and re-format the Disk.
Just to thank you for your very prompt and concise response to my enquiry. I have now re-formatted my disk for further use and am in the process of decommissioning my 10 year old IMAC.
