Thanks for clarifying your issue for us! Were you able to create a new Smart Mailbox to see if the issue persists? Were you also able to update the software version for your Mac?
If you haven't already, we'd also recommend force quitting your Mail app and then reopening it to see if you can see your Smart Mailbox will display your emails. You can follow the steps in How to force an app to quit on your Mac.

Could you elaborate on how your Smart Mailboxes aren't working for you? Are you able to create a new Smart Mailbox and see if you're still experiencing issues with it?
We also see that you may have a software update available for your Mac. We recommend making sure your macOS is up-to-date by following the steps in How to update the software on your Mac.

My system and apps are updated, and I have force quit Mail, started Mail holding the Shift key, etc...I'v tried all of these things.
