There’s no disk here, a failed disk, or maybe the disk has an unexpected format.

GUID Partitioning with Mac OS X Extended Journaled (HFS+) file system would be typical.

Replacing the partitioning and the file system involves erasing the entire contents of the volume.

Click the Back button, look in the Utilities menu, select Disk Utility, and see if that can locate any storage.

If it can, and if the volume does not contain data you need, erase and reformat it.

If not, you may be headed for a repair or replacement.

Options and alternatives here depend on which Mac and model year is involved.
