I have an old version of Apple iPod. How can I send it in for repairs?

I have an older version of an iPod that won't seem to play for some reason. There is a double line across the screen which won't let me do anything. I have tried to restart it matt times, but it won't even switch off.

It would help to know what you mean by "old"; Apple may not even be willing to look at it:

Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty [was: Vintage and obsolete products]
