On your Mac, iCloud is a sync service rather than a backup tool. See this link to set up iCloud Drive https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204025

To backup your Mac: use TimeMachine (already on your Mac) and an external drive https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201250
