Modifying contacts triggers beach balls

Contacts app -on Catalina post upgrade to 10.15.5 I think and now on Big Sur - going into beach ball any time I edit or delete a contact.

my contacts are on 2 clouds , pro and personal, for a total 15,000 or so

i am running iMac 27 2020 so the hardware is not the issue. I suspect interaction with Mail could be the issue.

2011 macmini running high Sierra and the contacts synced to the pro cloud does not seem to have the same issue (not running Mail though)

i reported the problem to apple support but they were not helpful .

Ok, but just re-installing them doesn't necessarily rule out that you are not reinstalling a corrupt contacts database. At least this is something to consider, especially if Apple Support didn't offer that as a possible explanation. Otherwise, maybe someone else here, who has come across the same issue, will chime in to assist you. Good luck!

The article referenced is helpful, but a bit flawed in that it says, "2. In that folder you will find three files...", but in my case there are far more than three files. If the answer intended "three files, among others," that should be stated. There are similarly-named files that make me wonder whether they need to be there:

ABAssistantChangelog.aclcddb

ABAssistantChangelog.aclcddb-shm

ABAssistantChangelog.aclcddb-wal

MailRecents-v4.abcdmr

MailRecents-v4.abcdmr-shm

MailRecents-v4.abcdmr-wal

as well as files named the same as in the original answer, but in subfolders under ~/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources.

I will start by just removing the three specified files, but... one wonders.
