The operation can't be completed because ".Trash" needs to be downloaded.

  • Big Sur 11.3.1 (20E241)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

Whenever I try to "Move to Trash" file(s)/directory(es) with ⌘⌫ or right click menu, I get error like this:

Only happens in directory outside of iCloud synced dirs, such as:

  • ~/Downloads/
  • ~/projects/some_project/hello.c

But I can delete files/directories that are synced via iCloud Drive in:

  • ~/Desktop/
  • iCloud Drive/Documents/

Thanks before, please ask if you need further details.

Hey Ybbond,

Thanks for posting your question in Apple Support Communities!

It looks like you are having some issues with moving files to the trash folder. There are a few things you can try in order to see if you can resolve this issue. First, try booting your Mac into safe mode and seeing if you are then able to move the files. If you are not, try running first aid on your startup disk using disk utility. You can find steps on how to boot into safe mode in this article: Start up your Mac in safe mode. You can also find steps on how to run first aid using this article: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility.

Best Wishes.
