When you select an email, the iphone changes to present that email. At the bottom of the iphone screen are four icons. the two on the right are obvious (reply and start a new email) but what are the left two. I clicked the leftmost one and now cannot find my email (which was a confirmation and I need to print it!).

The leftmost button when viewing a Mail message will either be a trash symbol to send a message to your trash or deleted items folder, or it will be an archive symbol, to send a message to the archive. This setting may depend on your email provider, and can sometimes be configured under:
The next button to the right can move a message into another mailbox.
