My iPhone SE has locked up more then three times already. I do have to do the process to unfreeze it and that works. But, why should I have to put up with this? It is a defective phone.
How do I go about getting a replacement? I do pay for the Apple care coverage.

Over what time period has these lock-ups occurred? Electronics and software can and do fail. Your iPhone is essentially a miniaturized computer, and has all the problems a computer would have. Occasionally freezing up is annoying but more or less expected. Over an extended timeline I wouldn't be worried but if they've been close to each other then I can see the concern.
Have there been any changes recently? Running hot? Slowing down? Assuming that your phone is up to date software wise I would take a look to see which, if any, apps are open in the background. In my experience an out of date app can wreck havoc on a recently updated phone. Moving on from that a hardware issue would most likely necessitate a trip to Apple to see what is causing the problem.

I purchased the phone July, 2020. I have had many different iPhones since the first one; the last one being the iPhone 6, and never had this occur more then two times. This is four times now on this phone. My wife has the same phone with no issues.
All apps and software is up to date. Not running hot. Not running slow.
Whenever this has occurred, I was taking the out of my pocket and I see it is locked up.
You are probably correct, I will need to take it to a store. However, I have a bad feeling that I will be stuck with this until I replace it down the road - which I will do.
