AirPod volume too low when used with iMac

How do you increase the volume when using AirPods with an iMac? The volume is fine and easily adjustable when I use my AirPods with my iPhone, but extremely low when I try to use them with my iMac. I can barely hear the sound, even with the volume turned up to max in Apple Music. Is there another volume control somewhere?
