5G Auto vs 5G On Cellular Setting

I find that the "5G Auto" setting is causing my phone to drop calls and completely go dark (no service) in areas that I previously had good LTE coverage. The auto function isn't properly switching between LTE and 5G. I updated my cellular settings to "5G On" and I see that the network is properly moving between LTE and 5G. Based on what I've read, the "5G Auto" setting should behave this way, but it's not. Anyone else having this problem? Verizon network with iPhone 12 Pro (1 week old).
