how do i connect my apple watch to wifi before pairing? My apple watch is a series 1 and it won't let me set it up to my phone because it says it's not connected to wifi

I usually just swipe up for Control Center and then click the Wi-Fi icon there.

But you can also use the Settings. Here all the steps in detail:
