Home Permissions

I have a kext file causing problems with my RAID driver. I am unable to delete the file.

When I tried to repair Home Permissions, the system says I don't have permission.

The options available under File/Info on the main disk and any subfolder are:

system read/write

wheel read only

everyone read only

I have attempted to go into Recovery mode and it doesn't even list the folder that I can see, but can't touch the files.

How do I get things back to where I own and control my device and files?

iMac 27″, macOS 11.3

You're right about the Documents folder. I accidentally clicked on the Downloads folder for my screenshot.

Try this: boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and try to delete the file from there. Then reboot normally.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

First make sure you are logged into an Administrative account.

Next Control (right) - click on your Home folder and select Get Info from the contextual menu.

When in the Info pane for your Home folder are you able to unlock the padlock at the bottom of the Info window?

If you're not able to then you don't have the correct privileges. If you do then click on the "+" button and add you to the list with Read & Write privileges.

Click on the circle with three dots button and select "Apply to enclosed items…" from the menu:

Then test again.

I get the same for the Home folder. Try the Desktop folder and see if you can give yourself Read & Write and apply to the contents. If that works do it also for the Documents folder.

My disk is APFS. I can unlock the padlock. I don't have the Ignore ownership on this volume option.

The sharing & permissions section only has system (read&write), wheel (read only), and everyone (read only). I am unable to add anyone else because it says I don't have the necessary permissions.

For the Home Folder as shown on the previous pic and yes, the padlock unlocked with my login password. I am the administrator.

If I click on the desktop icon of the system Macintosh HD, the only user with read & write permissions is system. The "apply to enclosed items" option is available there.

Before I do that could you take a look at what the permissions currently show for the Home folder?

I don't read Terminal. Post a screenshot of the Info pane for the Home, Desktop, Pictures, Music and Documents folders. Those are the folders where you would be most involved in as far as saving/moving files. You can line them all up together and take one screenshot to post.
