iPhone XR Front Camera Issue

My son recently complained about his iPhone XR's front camera. The camera app shows a black screen when using the selfie camera, the rear one is fine. Tried all of the recommended solutions over the internet except the one where I will be charged with $399.99 by Apple. Does anybody know of any other solutions? I was wondering why the face ID works. Doesn't the face ID use the front camera? Thank you.
