Apple watch doesn’t auto-detect outdoor walk

Adding to the previous content that Apple Watch doesn’t pick up when I’m walking outdoors. At this point Apple has improved upon auto sync with watch and iphone maps interface enough that I was using the maps feature yet Apple Watch only picked up on my outdoor activity when I arrived home. I understand the auto detect is a secondary option to manual start but it’s clearly too late when Ive arrived at my destination. Anyone else have this issue?

Yes I was kind of perplexed by the same initially. First it seemed like such an awesome feature, but then the reality kicked in and it wasn't that fantastic after all... Hopefully it gets smarter and more sensitive in the future. I can imagine it can be a challenge to tell them apart, if its a brisk walk or just wandering about in the garden for instance.

How is the workout recorded for you by the way? Is it starting from the point when the watch prompted you to start the workout, or from the point when the walk really started?
