iPhone not using wi-fi

Settings > Wi-Fi shows a connection. Connection not shown at top right of screen. And wi-fi seems not to be being used. Web pages load, or not at all, on weak wireless connection.

The iPhone will chose the stronger of the auto-join networks when a network drops below a certain strength.

Issues that may be related. I have two wi-fi networks. The one I have designated auto-join sometimes is not joined. Sometimes the second network is joined. Sometimes an Xfinity hotspot is joined

Sometimes when connected my home network will be dropped and an Xfinity hotspot is joined.

One more addition to the description of the issue: I don't have any of these problems with my iPad. Joins the preferred network without a hitch. Never drops it.
