My iMac is a mid-2010 and running High Sierra 10.13.6. I'm afraid that there might be issues if I upgrade to a newer operating system due to the age of my computer. Is that so?

Vertical lines indicate a hardware fault either with:

1) your display, its cable, or its inverter.

2) your video hardware or logic board.

Either may presage a total failure of the video function.

The only home diagnostics are:

  • Move the display on its pivot while it is on and watch for changes in the lines or flickering while the display in moving. That is the best-case scenario because that is indicative of a worn, 11-year old display cable. Cheap fix for parts, but takes some gutting of the computer that could be several hundreds in labor.
  • Attach an external monitor and watch for defects on that monitor. If they go away, item 1 above is at play. If the defects persist, that suggests the video card of the logic board is failing.

You need a 2012 or newer iMac to move past High Sierra.
