installing mac os x

I am trying to install mac os x on to my mac mini (2013) but when I get to the part that asks me which disk I want to install it on, no options are shown. I have read that I should partition my hdd to show a disk in this box. My mac mini actually has a sandisk ssd. Should I go ahead and create a partition. It warns that if I do , the ssd will be erased, so is it safe to do this. Should iI create only one partition?
